Altered Vessels

The pieces in this section demonstrate my relationship with porcelain and the potential which exisits to create interesting forms through the practice of manipulating the thrown vessels at different stages in the drying process.
Some of these altered vessels are also linked with the theme of the vessels as ‘individuals’ and with group dynamics. The strong cut, pushed and/or reassembled sides of each piece emphasizes ‘front’ and ‘back’ aspects of the forms – they may be placed facing each other in dialogue – or not.
Great care and attention is required in the construction of these forms. They must be perfectly thrown on the wheel and altered at the precise stages in the drying process.
To alter porcelain to this extent and avoid collapse and cracking is extremely challenging. The fineness of the rims is important to the way the piece is viewed but offers huge possibilities for loss of the pieces at all stages of their making.
Still, life would be very dull without those challenges.
